Dementia friendly signage

10/08/2023

The physical environment can play a significant role in the treatment of people with dementia. By making some simple changes to support a stimulating environment we have found that residents and patients appear happier, less bored and more likely to interact with other people.
Wall murals can help create a refreshed and interesting environment that encourages social interaction between resident and increase activity levels, so Find Memory Care have recently installed a wide range of murals and focal points around the home to do just this.

Light Enabling Vinyl

Light enabling vinyl has been placed on glass doors and surrounds to obscure the view and discourage resident from trying to exit. By using the vinyl light can still get into the hallway, however, by using the image of a railing residents are deterred from trying to exit.

Bus Stop and door murals

Studies of care setting environments have shown that murals, when used correctly, can help to reduce the stress of people living with dementia. Not only do the murals at the Old Vicarage create a splash of colour with beautiful views of the Lake District, but they also add a point of interest for residents.

Window-Cals

Window-cals have been used along corridors to create focal points and to enhance the living space.

Signage

Dementia friendly toilet signage has been put in place to aid way-finding and to help residents maintain their independence.
Along with the improvements above, the home has also introduced memory boxes, dementia-friendly clocks and orientation boards to encourage interaction and aid orientation.
